Hermosa Beach - Thursday 13th!

LA Green Drinkers,

Thanks to Dori Merifield for connecting us to the
smart® house and for Jenn Breckenridge of Eco Gift Expo for helping to create the largest LA Green Drinks yet!

For the first time we had organic beer, organic (mostly vegan) food, a DJ and a professional photographer. Unfortunately we also had lot of you who were not able to attend and we apologize for letting this happen. Our invitation went out after the Eco Gift Expo invite and the house had to stop accepting RSVP's after they had 275 respond. Whenever we do an event of this sort in the future we will be sure to accomodate all of our folks who want to attend.

Look for Dan at this months Hermosa Beach LA Green Drinks!

Day Without A Bag - December 20th A grassroots day of education and action, challenging holiday shoppers to forgo one-time, plastic shopping bags for the day in favor of reusable tote bags. Heal the Bay and its partners are organizing a two-hour event at one high-profile retail center, with satellite operations within each of the four other Los Angeles County supervisorial districts (ideally chain supermarkets, convenience stores or drug stores). We will distribute thousands of free, reusable bags to shoppers and urge them to return existing bags to be recycled a la old-fashioned paper drive. A press conference (with celebrity and electeds involvement) will disseminate messages throughout the county. A Day Without a Bag is one battlefront in the ongoing war against the scourge of plastic debris in our oceans and watersheds. It is primarily a vehicle for raising consumer awareness about personal choices. Thus, the day’s focus is on education rather than overt advocacy. The event empowers shoppers and the community at large to take direct action to eliminate unsightly debris and save taxpayer dollars.
  • More than 6 billion plastic bags are used in LA County each year. Because so few of them are recycled, the vast majority end up clogging precious landfill or littering public places.
  • Disposable bags cost our fiscally strained cities up to 17 cents per bag for disposal.
  • Plastic bags are made from petroleum. Americans use over 380 billion bags every year, throwing away millions of barrels of oil.
With New Year approaching, we want all shoppers to make resolution to adopt more sustainable practices year round.
