Earth2100 - Upload your future
ABC News is producing a 2-hour special called Earth 2100, a look at what some of the world's top scientists, economists, and historians say could happen to our planet if we maintain our present course. They're posting scenarios based on those projections for the years 2015, 2050, 2070, and 2100 on the ABC web site, and inviting people from all over the world to tell what it's like to live in this future. ABC is asking people to submit 1-3 minute videos that can be as simple or elaborate as you want them to be. They will post submitted videos online, and include the most compelling in their prime time broadcast in September. This is a unique opportunity to shed light on our future, and they are very excited to hear what people are thinking. To read the briefings, and for more information on how to get involved, go to their web-site. They are looking to get submissions in ASAP, but can extend the deadline for 2015 submissions through mid-July.

Pharmaka Goes Green on Discovery Channel's Alter Ego -- late July 2008
101 West 5th St., Los An
geles, CA 90013 (map)
A Non-Profit Institution in Downtown Los Angeles’ Gallery Row District
Gallery, 213-689-7799
Gallery Hours: Wednesday through Saturday 12 – 6 pm

Raising the bar of sustainable design standards, Pharmaka’s non-profit art exhibition space has gone “Green”. With help from the
Discovery Channel and Byrd Development, Pharmaka has made substantial eco-friendly changes to the downtown gallery space. Improvements include replacement of inefficient incandescent track lighting with state of the art LED light fixtures provided by Green Torch and an air circulation system provided by Big Ass Fans. Additionally, new furniture supplied by Ford Brady is made of 100% sustainable materials. With these new improvements, Pharmaka reduced their annual energy consumption by 90% and set forth a new standard in sustainable design in downtown Los Angeles.

Located at the corner of 5th
and Main streets, Pharmaka is a pioneer in the redevelopment of downtown Los Angeles and is at the center of this new urban landscape. Created by artists and run by Shane Guffogg and Rebecca O'Leary, Pharmaka bridges the gap between museum exhibitions and commercial gallery shows. As a non-profit organization, Pharmaka is able to exhibit artwork that is socially relevant and unlikely to be seen in other venues.

The greening of Pharmaka was filmed during the week of May 3rd for "Alter Eco" will air on the Discovery Channel in late July.

Hands-On Gardening, Permaculture, and Self-Sufficiency - FREE introductory day on July 26 9:30 - 12:30(space limited)
Twice monthly, on Saturday mornings, 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM
August 9, 23; September 13, 27; October 11, 25
The most common request I receive from students is that they learn best by DOING and want more hands-on experience to develop skills they can’t get from lectures. To address that need, I’ll be mentoring students from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, two Saturdays per month while we actually design, tear-down, build, plant, install, harvest, and otherwise work and have fun at a small organic farm, Dragonfly Ranch, in Topanga.
What do you want to learn? Dozens of projects are available. Examples include biointensive planning, design, and planting during late summer for hot-weather crops and for fall/winter harvest (yes, there are veggies you can plant this time of year); food forest design, preparation, and installation; ecofriendly terracing using stumps and rocks to make new beds; growing to seed and saving seeds; and permaculture retrofit of a front yard area. We may be building and testing various designs for solar water sills, cookers, showers, and food dryers. Many other projects are expected.
Do you want to transition to serving clients? Tackle design, installation, and maintenance projects under the supervision of an expert, from pruning to grafting (spring for most species), from site measurement and analysis to species selection, or be part of the group that interviews the homeowner and gathers data for a permaculture design. Want to learn how to grow food in So Calif during late summer, fall, and winter? Join the biontensive-planting activities; we may be putting in heat-tolerant edibles, including some that aren’t usually grown in home gardens like moth beans and sorghum, and will be planning and installing a fall/winter vegetable garden. Want to learn the incredibly valuable skill of ecofriendly terracing? Start by measuring grade, angle of slope, and drawing a basic topographic map.
A large number of topics will be covered as projects progress, from gathering technical data to sheet mulching, from swaling to client relations, from pruning to seed saving, from companion planting to soil acidification.
Dragonfly Ranch is a certified organic farm. Our practices will go beyond what is required to maintain such certification into ecofriendly, sustainable, hyperorganic methods.
July 26 is a FREE introductory day. Tuition thereafter is $60 per month if paid in advance. Space is limited; contact Darren Butler to reserve your attendance. Tuition price may change at any time and may be adjusted either up or down to manage group size. A deposit of half tuition is required to hold your attendance for any given month. Up to three months’ attendance may be guaranteed in advance at the current rate with full prepayment. Note that I’m keeping costs low because the work you’ll be doing is expected to pay approximately half of your tuition. I plan to keep sessions fun, educational, and free of drudgery, but please come expecting to work.
Course dates: July 26 (FREE); August 9, 23; September 13, 27; October 11, 25. Saturdays from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Dates from November onward will vary and are expected to be announced at least two months in advance. Sessions may continue after 12:30 PM on some days, and may be held on consecutive weeks during some months.
Course location: Greenleaf Canyon in Topanga. Access is from Topanga Canyon Blvd, and requires driving more than mile through difficult, narrow, bumpy, sometimes unpaved private and variably maintained roads, with steep dropoffs beside the road in some sections. The site is accessible to normal street vehicles but these must be driven slowly and cautiously.
Course fee: $60 per month (two sessions) if paid in full by the first day of any given month or $35 per session or on the day of (if space is available). Tuition price may change at any time and the price stated on my website may not be accurate. For those interested, attendance to 24 sessions (one year equivalent) qualifies students for a certificate of completed apprenticeship with Darren Butler. Priority for enrollment will be given to regular attendees.
Enrollment, payment, and refund policy:
Half tuition must be sent to reserve enrollment, with the remaining half due by the first day of class. If full tuition is not paid by the second class, attendance is expected to stop until payment is completed. Full refunds less $50 will be available until seven days before the first session. No refunds thereafter except for cancellation by the instructor. If tentative details change after enrollment has been paid, full refund is available until three daysbefore the first class if cancellation is based upon the change(s).
Payment is by check, cash, or money order and should be sent to Darren Butler, PO Box 920434, Sylmar CA 91392-0434. Contact me if you prefer to pay with a credit card via the internet.
Courses not guaranteed to carry. Some courses fill up quickly. To avoid disappointment, please do not delay.

Permaculture Design Course with Graham Burnett, August 2nd – 15th
Join lead instructor Graham Burnett, www.grahamburnett.ne, who is traveling from England to teach the course, Scott Horton, editor of Permaculture Activist Magazine,
, William Faith, cofounder of Ars Terra, arsterra.org, and Darren Butler, EcoWorkshops.com for what promises to be a life-changing, mind-opening two-week intensive Permaculture Design Course at Animal Acres in Acton, California, (talent show may occur on Aug 17).
A huge variety of permaculture topics will be covered. The v
aried expertise of the instructors ensures that even those already proficient with permaculture will be exposed ideas, techniques, perspectives, and information new to them.
The cost is only $700 for the entire two-week course, far less than the average cost of such a course, and this includes onsite vegan meals. An advance-registration discount of $100 is available if payment in full is completed by July 1, dropping the price to an almost unbelievable $600. Onsite camping is available for an additional $100.
The course is organized by and offered through
Ars Terra. Also at their site is an explanation of what permaculture is. Email William Faith at sendto:info@arsterra.orgor call (661) 273-9448 to sign up.

For more information, contact Matthew Shaffer, sendto:matthew.shaffer@tpl.org, (415) 495-4014. How did Park(ing) Day start? San Francisco art collective REBAR first created "PARK(ing)" in 2005 to re-imagine the potential of the metered parking space. In 2006, in collaboration with TPL, REBAR founded "PARK(ing) Day": a global exploration of the creative potential of streets. National Parking Day is a celebration of parks and open space, and you are invited to participate. If you participate with The Trust for Public Land (TPL), you are asked to honor the terms of the license given by the inventors of Parking Day, the artists collective named REBAR (i) by working with TPL to give REBAR credit in any materials you display or distribute, and (ii) by not making a commercial use of this celebration in the form of sales or services in the park. If you create a park independent of The Trust for Public Land and you are a commercial entity, please contact REBAR at participate@parkingday.org to arrange for permission to do so under REBAR's Creative Commons License.

Free Recycling Through the Mail In Los Angeles Post Office
Free and green. Those are the goals of a pilot program recently launched by the U.S. Postal Service that allows customers to recycle small electronics and inkjet cartridges by mailing them free of charge.
"Mail Back" program helps consumers make more environmentally friendly choices, making it easier for customers to discard used or obsolete small electronics in an environmentally responsible way. Customers use free envelopes found in 1,500 Post Offices to mail back inkjet cartridges, PDAs, Blackberries, digital cameras, iPods and MP3 players – without having to pay for postage.
The free, postage-paid Mail Back envelopes can be found on displays in Post Office lobbies. There is no limit to the number of envelopes customers may take. The pilot is set for 10 areas across the country, including Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles and San Diego, but could become a national program this fall if the pilot program proves successful.
