"The 11th HOUR" Documentary
Leonardo DiCaprio's "The 11th Hour" is a feature length documentary concerning the environmental crises caused by human actions and their impact on the planet. "The 11th Hour" documents the cumulative impact of these actions upon the planet's life systems and calls for restorative action through a reshaping of human activity. With the help of over fifty of the world's most prominent thinkers and activists, including reformer Mikhail Gorbachev, physicist Stephen Hawking, and Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai, "The 11thHour" documents the grave problems facing the planet's life systems. Global warming, deforestation, mass species extinction, and depletion of the oceans' habitats are all addressed, and their causes rooted in human activity. The combination of these crises call into question the very future not of the planet, but of humanity. However, the most powerful element of "The 11th Hour" is not a portrait of a planet in crisis, but the offering of hope and solutions. Scientists and environmental advocates such as Paul Hawken, Bill McKibben and Ray Anderson paint a portrait for a radically new and exciting future in which humanity seeks not to dominate the earth's life systems, but to mimic them and coexist. "The 11th Hour" calls for a future now within our grasp that is both sustainable and healthier.

THE CHILDREN’S NATURE INSTITUTE CALLS FOR ‘GREEN’ VOLUNTEERS
CNI Encourages Los Angeles Area Nature Enthusiasts to Walk the Walk
LOS ANGELES—The Children’s Nature Institute (CNI) invites Los Angeles nature enthusiasts to attend an orientation and open house for their Volunteer Walk Leader Training program on
Wednesday, October 31 from 10am til Noon
at Franklin Canyon Park in Beverly Hills.

The orientation will introduce potential volunteers to CNI’s volunteer program, which allows volunteers to lead walks at their convenience and at trails near their homes for local families and inner-city kids.

CNI offers volunteers an exciting leadership training program; upon completion, participants will be certified to volunteer to lead nature walks for newborns through 8-year-olds at trails near their homes. The training will be held at Franklin Canyon Park in Beverly Hills.

Lizette Castaño, CNI’s Executive Director, explained that the orientation is a great way to discover a unique volunteer program. "This amazing program is really fun for the whole family! We encourage moms and dads to take the training with their young children. In fact, kids as young as 6 can train to lead walks with you. Free childcare is available for younger children,” Castaño said.

Volunteers who participate in the training program will be trained in Southern California flora and fauna, safety and age-appropriate nature activities for children to perform on the trail. No experience is necessary. Volunteers can lead on weekdays or weekends and can choose from more than 50 parks and canyons throughout Los Angeles and Ventura Counties to lead their nature walks. “Many people already take walks in the hills. Why not share your love of nature with others at the same time?” Castaño said.

For more information about the orientation and open house,
call Volunteer Coordinator James Sackheim at (310) 860-9484

LA REGIONAL DIRECTOR FOR SOLAR NON-PROFIT
Founded during the 2001 California energy crisis, GRID Alternatives' mission is to empower communities in need to meet their basic requirements of health, education, and economic opportunity by providing renewable energy and energy efficiency services, equipment, and training. GRID Alternatives provides these services exclusively to low-income households earning less than 80% of area median income, including families, seniors, and persons with disabilities. Our programs seek to enhance long-term housing affordability for low-income households by permanently reducing their energy costs, and to expand economic opportunity by providing skills and training in the growing field of solar electricity.

We are looking for a full time Regional Director to help bring GRID Alternatives programs providing free renewable energy and energy efficiency services to low-income homeowners in the Greater Los Angeles Area and surrounding regions. The Regional Director will manage the operations of GRID Alternatives LA office and transition that office into a GRID Alternatives LA Affiliate.

Job Duties
The Regional Director will report to the Executive Director of GRID Alternatives and will work directly with the Bay Area GRID Alternatives staff to develop local infrastructure in anticipation of transitioning LA office to an LA GRID Alternatives affiliate. Due to the start-up nature of the LA office, Regional Director will initially be required to do a little bit of everything this may include volunteer management, construction related tasks, administrative duties and taking out the trash. The specific job duties for which this position was created include:.
• Helping coordinate large (30 house) solar installation project at end of October.

• Building an advisory board of directors that will eventually become the LA Affiliate's founding board of directors
• Establishing infrastructure for transition of office to affiliate status.
• Developing and maintaining partnerships with affordable housing developers, job training programs, local government housing departments, etc.
• Working with and reporting to GRID Alternatives Bay Area staff.
• Managing the finances of LA office, under the financial oversight of GRID Alternatives' Program Director and Bookkeeper.
• Building a GRID Alternatives Southern California presence and representing a positive public image of GRID Alternatives (including networking and speaking presentations).
• Identifying and interfacing with program clients.
• With the assistance of local Americorps volunteer, recruiting and managing volunteers.
• Working directly with GRID Alternatives Bay Area staff to develop short and long term vision for LA area operations.

Necessary skills and qualifications

• Previous non-profit management experience
• Strong ties or roots in LA
• Connections in the LA affordable housing, philanthropic, low-income advocacy communities
• Knowledge of solar energy

Office Location
GRID Alternatives does not currently have an office in the LA area. Initially, there will be opportunities to work from home; however, part of job duties will require helping to locate suitable office space. The expectation is that once an office has been located, the Regional Director will work full time out of that office.
Compensation
$72,000 annually + medical, dental, vacation, and 403b retirement plan
