Santa Monica Public Library presents Four films that examine the relationship between humans and planet Earth. The films will be shown monthly from February through May, 2007. All films will screen in the Martin Luther King Jr.Auditorium in the Main Library, 601 Santa Monica Boulevard.
Al Gore’s film An Inconvenient Truth will be shown on Wednesday, April 4 at 7:00 p.m.
The final film in the series, Fast Food Nation, will screen on Wednesday, May 16 at 7:00 p.m.

This new web site can be a resource for all of us. We can share
information and use it as a way to build our community. There are several
links on there already and we would love to have more from you.
The site will become a resource with lots of information posted on it. IF
you have info you think will benefit others please sent it to the email
address on this newsletter and we will get it in as appropriate.
The site is brand new and probably has some glitches and bugs. Different
web browsers react differently so your help in sorting it out would be
great. Please let us know of any that you find so we can get it to be really good.
There is also a Google group set up for us to share information directly. It
is just starting now so it is pretty basic but who knows how much we can

Our Club has been built around tabling at events like the Earthday Event
on the 3rd Street Promenade. This is how to get your local area going with
a group that can work on your local issues. And this really works.

In 2005 we worked with the Westside Greens to Share a booth. That is
when we connected with the electric car people and many others. By the
following year we put together the Sustainable Transport Village with a
fantastic array of alternatives from close to a dozen different groups.

Friends 4 Expo was next door with the Sierra Club
This was the first time all these alternatives came together in our area to
show the range of sustainable options. This was one of the bigger steps
that led to the Alternative Car Expo (the Alt Build Expo being the biggest
step in that direction).
We have grown considerably as a group since then. We have a substantial
group of people in Santa Barbara and concentrations around Pasadena and
in the South Bay. There are others across the state, around the country and
even in Europe.
What if we put together Sustainable Transport Villages in four or five
locations! What if we could get them in ten or twenty locations!
How cool would it be if we could claim to be part of such an effort? One
Village is cool; a network of a dozen working together is a movement! It
would get the presses attention and really help get the word out about our
alternatives. It creates a focus that really gets people going on using
sustainable alternatives. That improves the marketing of our message and
of our products.
Earthday is being celebrated on April 14th here in Santa Monica. We
already have a group in Manhattan Beach that is interested. The Bio-
Diesel Co-op is gearing up to do something. The bigger weekend will be
April 21st. That gives us two weekends.

Greening LA USD Campuses with Funds and Trees
Planet Green and TreePeople have partnered to challenge the Los Angeles Unified School
District (LAUSD) to put more green into their lives. Together they are offering the
implementation of a campus based e-waste recycling program combined with a tree planting
incentive. The concept is incredibly simple. Recycle 1,500 qualified inkjet cartridges with
Planet Green and they will sponsor the planting of ten trees on that school campus. In
addition to increasing the beauty and health of LAUSD campuses, through Planet Green’s
recycling program, each school will raise on average $2,070.00 to reach their 1,500 inkjet
cartridge goal. Their combined efforts will also contribute to the mission of Mayor Antonio
Villaraigosa’s Million Trees LA Initiative (www.millionstreesla.com).
Since Planet Green’s inception in 2000 it has quickly become the leading inkjet, laser
cartridge and cell phone recycling program. They have been able to assist thousands of
schools, non-profits, and religious organizations in raising vital funds for their causes. Planet
Green’s mission is to provide an e-waste recycling program; in addition to educating our
population that e-waste is reusable, not disposable. Planet Green strongly believes that
education is the key to changing unsustainable practices and hopes that everyone will
become active in combating e-waste. According to Recharger magazine, “Every year, more
than 300 million plastic printer cartridges end up dumped in landfills in the United States
and around the world - almost eight cartridges are thrown away in the United States every
second.” Through the support of their participants, Planet Green has been able to motivate
awareness to Reduce, Recycle, Reprint.
